The government wants to import and export wheat from India to the government level (GTOG). India imposed a ban on wheat exports 10 days ago. However, despite the ban, new doors are about to open. Meanwhile, a letter was sent to Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Delhi Muhammad Imran last Sunday(May 22, 2022) to look into the matter.
In a letter to High Commissioner Muhammad
Imran, the food ministry said, In the interest of importing wheat from India to
Bangladesh, he should contact the appropriate authorities of India. He has been
asked to take necessary steps to expedite the import of wheat from the country
on GTOG basis through NACOF or other Indian agencies.
The National Federation of Farmers Procurement
Processing and Retailing Cooperatives of India (NACOF) said in a recent letter
that it was interested in exporting wheat to Bangladesh. After this letter,
Bangladesh has been asked to take necessary action.
The food ministry imports five to six lakh tonnes
of wheat every year. The annual demand of wheat in the country is 75 lakh tons.
The country produces 11 lakh tons. The remaining 6.4 million tons of wheat was
imported from Russia, Ukraine, India and Canada.
