The Cabinet of Bangladesh has approved the ratification of the “Agreement on Co-operation and Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters” signed between Bangladesh and Turkey.
The approval was given at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (November 16, 2020). The Prime Minister from Ganobhaban and the concerned ministers from the Secretariat took part in the virtual cabinet meeting.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told a briefing at the Secretariat that the Foreign Minister said many of our items could not enter Turkey due to the lack of an agreement. Our exports to Turkey have declined. That's when we pointed out to them that they said to complete the deal. If there is an agreement, we can see the items and understand which items are substitute for us and which items are complementary. We will give many benefits to the complementary items that will come to you. In that case, it may increase again, we will not be able to give much benefit to those substitute items.
The cabinet secretary said, so we will not get that benefit until there is an agreement. In the last 2 to 3 years, our exports to Turkey have dropped by more than 100 million.
He said the agreement would boost bilateral trade. Institutional communication between the two countries will be strengthened. And one country will be able to provide information to another country to prevent illegal trade and smuggling of goods. The economy, public interest and other interests of both the countries will be affected. Because we can bring what we need from Turkey.
The two countries will also assist each other in their financial intelligence activities. And if we can see the mutual cooperation for the development of customs, especially the customs facilities in Turkey, we can improve our customs with co-operation there.
