In view of the global food crisis, Bangladesh needs to do whatever it takes

We often say that Bangladesh is self-sufficient in food. This is largely true for rice, fish, meat, and vegetables. But we are still not able to meet our demand in the production of food products such as wheat, dal, oil, and several spices. So we are yet to achieve self-sufficiency in those products. We have to import those products every year to meet our needs. Due to the Corona epidemic and the prolongation of the Russia-Ukraine war, the top international organizations believe that there may be a food crisis in the world in 2023. To deal with that crisis, the first thing needed is an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, which mostly depends on Russia. If the world falls into a crisis, Russia will not be left out, it will also fall into a huge crisis. Mr. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has brought danger to himself as well as the whole world in order to maintain his eccentric mentality.

Every country in the world is doing whatever it takes to protect itself from the impending crisis, including fair and optimal production, distribution, austerity, and conservation of its own resources. Bangladesh also has to think about the matter very seriously, not just thinking, but actually doing it. The actual situation of food products in Bangladesh is that Bangladesh had to import 1 crore 5 lakh 33 thousand tons of food in the last financial year. In the current financial year, the amount of this import may be slightly reduced to 1 crore 4 lakh 49 thousand tons. This information is from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) food grain report of last September. Imports may decrease this time. The reason for this is not the increased production of food grains in the country; Rather, the import of all types of products including food will decrease due to various reasons including the dollar crisis in the country, and the increase in prices in the world market.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak gave some information at an event to explain the pressure on the country's economy while importing food products. He said that it takes Tk 20 to 24 thousand crores to import edible oil in the country every year.

Apart from this, Bangladesh imports a large part of basic foods like pulses, maize, wheat, and powdered milk. About 70 to 75 lakh tons of wheat, which has become the second staple food of the country, has to be imported. In the last fiscal year 2021-22, Bangladesh only imported rice worth Tk 850 crore. Wheat worth 1 thousand 830 crores. The list of imports includes food products like powdered milk, spices, and pulses. It was said on the occasion that the government has planned to increase the production of edible oil by 40 percent in the next three years. At the same time, a plan has been taken to increase the production of rice by 3.2 million tons. In the last 12 years, food import in the country has increased continuously. The experts are saying that it is possible to produce food in a country where a large amount of foreign currency is going to be imported!

The purchase of food products from the world market should be reduced. There is no alternative to increasing food production. In order to survive, policymakers, producers including the government's agriculture, fisheries, and food agencies need to act now.-Editor
