The yield of
paddy has been good. That should make the farmer happy. But many farmers are
heartbroken after going to some paddy fields. Rats have cut the rice plants and
cut the rice stalks and filled the holes. In this way, rats have destroyed
two-three centuries of paddy in one kiya (bigha) of land. As a result, they are
not getting the expected harvest of the farmers in those lands.
Rats have
harmed the farmers in areas adjacent to Sherpur Band (Math) of Khalilpur Union
of Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila, Khainjar Haor of Mostafapur Union, Kowadighi Haor
of Rajnagar Upazila. Many have given drugs to kill rats as advised by the
Department of Agriculture Extension, but it has not helped much.
Sadar
Upazila Sherpur Md. Nurul Islam recently said, "I have farmed using modern
farming methods. Paddy has also improved. But out of this, four to five hundred
paddy fields were destroyed by rodents in two Kiya lands. Many people have used
many different drugs to protect their crops from rodents. But there was no
profit. He said that the ancillary expenses including land preparation, tillage,
fertilizing, weeding, and weeding for growing crops on his three kiya lands had
cost about 23 thousand taka. As suggested by the local agricultural officials,
the mice were sprinkled with smelly biscuits to repel them, to no avail. The
mouse did not leave the field. Mice become active during solitary periods.
It is known
locally that Nazrul Islam of Sherpur has got 18 maunds of paddy in his two kyar
land. He is supposed to get at least 30 maunds of paddy from the crops grown on
this land. The situation is the same for many other farmers. Rats also damaged
other farmers including Mustakin Mia, and Gauch Mia of the same village
(Sherpur).
Dudh Mia, a
farmer in Sherpur village, said, "Rats are not keeping us."
Harvesting rice freely. Big black mice. All the raw and ripe rice is harvested.
Harvesting starts from the moment the paddy is planted until the paddy is ripe.
not just me The condition of all people is the same.
According to
local sources, rats started attacking Haor, Beel and reservoir-adjacent areas
after planting paddy. The paddy bunch is cut, and from that cut bunch, new buds
are being given. Rats are also cutting that bud again. At the place where the
paddy is cut, the cutting starts again in the nearby place. In lands with human
movement, less paddy is harvested near the aisles. Most of the rice is
harvested where there is less traffic between the fields. After harvesting the
paddy, the paddy plant dies completely. Many farmers are sprinkling poisoned
wheat, and smelly biscuits to eat as advised by local officials of the
agriculture department.
A single rat
of large black color. Many go to the field at night to chase rats. But mice
don't move much. Rats are cutting rice in different fields. Rats are cutting
rice stalks and taking them to pits. Although the rice is good, due to rats,
not more than eight to nine maunds of paddy are harvested in different fields.
Where a minimum of 15-16 maunds of paddy should be obtained. Rats are
destroying three to four hundred acres of paddy every year. These rodents are
now causing havoc to local farmers. Has become a cause of panic. Apart from
this, there is a lot of rat infestation in Khainjar Howor of Mustafapur Union
of Sadar Upazila. The Panchgaon area of Kowadighi Hawarpar of Rajnagar Upazila
also has rat infestation.
Iqbal Hasan
Jalali, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Sherpur Block of Khalilpur
Union, said that the Directorate of Agricultural Extension has conducted a
seminar on rodent control at the district office of Moulvibazar. Rats are
damaging crops.
Agriculture
Extension Department Moulvibazar deputy director agriculturist Samchuddin Ahmed
said, "Our operation is going on to control rats." Farmers are
encouraged to kill rats as best they can with drugs and traps. Rats cut down
the rice plants, cut the rice stalks and take them to the rice pit. The attack
of rats is increasing in the land around the bill or wetlands in various places
including Sadar, Rajnagar of the district.
