Although many consignments of imported goods were received by traders for sale during Ramadan, they were not marketed. These products are trapped at ports, depots and Chittagong and Narayanganj bases. Marketing has been delayed due to the impact of the coronavirus on transport and labor crises, congestion at ports and limited activities of companies involved in unloading goods. As a result, prices of Ramadan products have increased. According to Tuesday's (21 April, 2020) market price of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), prices of almost all the commodities that are sold on the daily basis have gone up. Pea pulses, lentils and legumes - the prices of these three varieties have increased by 19 percent over a month. Open soybean and palm oil prices rose about 5 percent. Sugar prices have risen by about 4 percent. The price of dates has increased by 9 percent. Khandaker Golam Moazzem, research director at the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a research institute, said unloading of food grains and Ramadan products should be given top priority at the moment. Field administration should supervise the activities of transporting consumer goods at ports, wharves and roads. Because, if the imported product is not marketed consistently, then it will affect the price. Food grains- wheat, pulses, crude sugar are imported in big ships. These goods were transferred from large ships in outer anchors to lighter ships and unloaded at 39 wharves across the country by river. From the general holiday to the last Monday (April 26, 2120), about 10 lakh 40,000 tonnes of consumer goods were released from the big vessels at the port's outskirts. Of these, Pea pulses, lentils, peas, edible oils, sugar, sugar cane are extracted in 6 lakh 38 thousand tonnes. Products like gram, lentils, dates, ginger, garlic, onion and refined sugar are imported in containers. According to port sources, there are products like ginger, garlic and onion in containers in the port. But not in quantity. Again, some products like gram and dates have to be unloaded from the port to the depot. As a private container depot, the deposit has 72 containers stacked and 206 container sugar. Apart from this, the date palm is also caught. Traders are slowly getting rid of all the activities. Source: Online/SZK
