But now China has surpassed Bangladeshis. China is now at the top in terms of rice consumption. China has left behind not only Bangladesh but also India. China is also at the top in rice production. Such information is found on The Economist's 'World in Figures' website about the statistics and trends of the world economy. The Economist has made the list of countries that are leading in rice consumption with the statistics of the last 2013-14 financial year. In 2013-14, the Chinese people ate a total of 14 crore 63 lakh crore tons of rice. India is in the next position. The people of the country have eaten 9 crore 91 lakh 80 thousand tons of rice. The people of Indonesia are in the third position after consuming 38 crore 50 lakh tons of rice. And the fourth is Bangladesh. The people of this country have eaten 3 crore 49 lakh tons of rice in that year. One of the reasons China is ahead is because of its large population. According to 2014 data, the Economist says the country has a population of 140 crore, India has 130 crore, And 15 crore 88 lakh in Bangladesh. However, Bangladeshis are lagging behind in terms of total population, but they are ahead of the Chinese in terms of per capita rice consumption. In the 2013-14 financial year an average Bangladeshi ate 217 kg of rice. In the case of Indonesian people this amount is 151 kg of rice. And the Chinese ate 104 kg of rice. Indians are the least only 76 kg of rice! Source: Online/SZK
