Xylogenics, Inc. Secures U.S. Patent for Breakthrough Yeast Strain Advancing Fuel Ethanol Production

Indianapolis, IN – (May 29, 2025) – Xylogenics Inc., a pioneering biotech firm in the renewable energy sector, proudly announces the issuance of U.S. Patent 12,203,111, titled Materials and Methods for Creating Strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae That Exhibit an Increased Ability to Ferment Oligosaccharides into Ethanol. This patent is a key component of Xylogenics’ Xcelsior yeast strains and represents a significant advancement in fuel ethanol production by addressing long-standing challenges in yeast fermentation efficiency.

The newly patented yeast strain exhibits an enhanced ability to co-ferment maltose and glucose, a breakthrough in commercial fuel ethanol production. In standard fuel ethanol yeast strains, the presence of glucose inhibits robust maltose fermentation, limiting overall ethanol yield and efficiency. Xylogenics’ innovative approach overcomes this limitation, enabling efficient fermentation of high maltose syrups into ethanol even in the presence of glucose.

“This patent represents a major milestone in our mission to reduce the cost of ethanol production and advance the value proposition of biofuels to consumers,” said Josh Heyen, CEO and President of Xylogenics. ”These advancements accelerate fermentation kinetics in Xylogenics strains, allowing for faster, more efficient production of fuel ethanol. We are excited by this and further advancements we have made to this technology as we work to accelerate the evolution of renewable biofuel production.”

This breakthrough has the potential to drive cost savings and efficiency improvements across the fuel ethanol industry, offering producers a more robust yeast strain for higher ethanol yields from existing feedstocks. The technology aligns with the industry’s efforts to enhance biofuel production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Xylogenics is committed to advancing biotechnological innovations that support the sustainable production of renewable fuels. The company plans to collaborate with ethanol producers to integrate this novel yeast strain into commercial operations.
