Improving gut health in poultry production

Improving gut health in poultry production

In commercial poultry farming, the health and efficiency of the animals play a crucial role. The influences are multifactorial, but a promising approach to increasing efficiency is maintaining and continuously improving gut health. Here, we want to highlight the impact of essential oils and butyrates with their positive effects on the gut.

Importance of gut health

Gut health is a central factor for the overall health and performance of poultry. A healthy gut promotes nutrient absorption, strengthens the immune system and improves feed conversion. This leads to better growth rates thus higher slaughter weights, directly influencing the production parameters and financial success of farmers. Stable gut health also reduces the risk of diseases and minimizes the use of antibiotics, offering both economic and health benefits.

Essential oils and their effect on the microbiota

Essential oils, as contained in Miarom Intest L, have proven to be valuable supplements in animal nutrition. Its oils, including caraway, star anise, chamomile, ginger, cinnamon and oregano, stabilize the gut microbiota and promote digestion. They have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, leading to improved health and performance of the animals. A study showed that the composition of essential oils in Miarom Intest L promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria while inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms. This results in better nutrient absorption and overall more stable gut health.

Butyric acid and the growth of intestinal villi

Butyric acid, a main component of AmiVit GOLD, is known for its positive effect on the growth of intestinal villi. The villi are crucial for nutrient absorption and increasing their surface area can significantly enhance feed conversion efficiency. Butyric acid serves as an energy source for the cells of the villi and supports their regeneration and growth. This ensures that the nutrients (B-vitamins and amino acids) included in AmiVit GOLD can be more sustainably absorbed. This leads to improved feed conversion and better overall health of the animals.

Institutional trial to substantiate the potential

A trial at the Feedtest Institution in Eastern Germany investigated the effects of AmiVit GOLD and Miarom Intest L on Ross 308 broilers. Despite the nearly ideal conditions at the test facility, which usually minimize differences between the test and control groups, the results showed positive effects.

*Trial Design and Results

*Species: Ross 308 (male)

*Location: Feedtest Institution, test farm in Eastern Germany

*Duration: 33 days

*Feeding phases: Starter (0-7 days), Grower (8-21 days), Finisher (22-33 days)

The results showed that the test group, had similar final body weights while showing a better feed conversion (1.39 vs. 1.42). This directly impacts the farm's profitability through less feed usage per kg of body weight.

Additionally, a significantly lower oocyst count in the feces was observed, indicating interesting potential for managing coccidiosis. These results underscore the potential of the products, especially in real farm environments where the challenges that continuously negatively impact production parameters are much greater, and thus the return on investment could be significantly better.
