Everyone has their own path to success and for 20-year-old Muhammad Hazim Mohd. Akhir, that path leads straight to the heart of agriculture. Instead of following the typical route of furthering his studies or working in an office job, Hazim has found his calling in managing his family’s 16-hectare palm oil plantation, earning a steady income of RM7,000 a month.

A Passion for Agriculture

At just 20 years old, Hazim is already making a name for himself in the agricultural world. But his journey didn’t start when he was earning a salary, it began years earlier when he started helping his father, as reported by Kosmo!,

“I began helping my father when I was 12. It wasn’t just because I was interested in farming but also because I saw how hard my father worked every day from dawn until dusk. That inspired me to step in and help out.” Hazim says.

Despite the common perception that agriculture is a dirty, tough, and dangerous job, Hazim doesn’t see it that way. Instead, he believes that with the right mindset and careful planning, farming can be both fulfilling and financially rewarding.

“Some people think the agricultural sector is too challenging, but if you manage it properly, it’s not as difficult as people imagine,” Hazim explains.

A Family Affair, Managing the Plantation

The palm oil plantation has been a family affair, with Hazim’s father playing a key role in its management. From spraying pesticides and fertilizing the crops to harvesting and processing the palm oil, his father oversees every aspect of the operation, with the help of two workers. But Hazim doesn’t just stick to the day-to-day running of the plantation. He’s also forward-thinking, having started a nursery for oil palm seedlings in preparation for future replanting.

This is vital for maintaining the plantation’s productivity and ensuring it remains economically viable.

Steady Income and Future Ambitions

The price of palm oil remains relatively stable, ranging between RM890 and RM950 per tonne. Thanks to good pest control practices, Hazim enjoys a steady income throughout the year.

“Most of my earnings are saved to buy more land and expand the plantation,” says Hazim.

“Right now, I’m putting aside my dreams of owning a luxury car or the latest gadgets. I’d rather use the money to grow my assets. My goal is to own a house and land before I get married.”

In addition to managing the palm oil plantation, Hazim also grows other crops like bamboo, pineapple, and bananas, as well as raising livestock. This diversification helps him ensure a steady income while building a solid foundation for the future.
