Advance Amon has increased farmers' income. So there is no
end to curiosity about this rice. Compared to conventional Aman paddy, this
variety of rice ripens one and a half months earlier. Bangladesh Institute of
Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) developed a short life span high yielding the Advance
Aman cultivar Binadhan-16 with a bumper yield of paddy. Farmers are selling hay
at high prices. This has created an opportunity for them to cultivate 3 to 4
crops in a year. Farmers of Gopalganj have become interested in cultivating
this type of rice which will be profitable in the future.
Sources from the Bina Gopalganj sub-centre have informed that
Gopinathpur, Suktail, Jalabad of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila and Maheshpur,
Bethuri, Fukra Union of Kashiani Upazila have been cultivating this rice for at
least 5 years. This year 300 farmers in the district have cultivated Binadhan-16
on 150 hectares of land. 6 tons of rice of this variety has been produced per
hectare. Compared to conventional Aman, this paddy ripens one and a half months
earlier.
Sumon Khan, a farmer of Paikerdanga village of Gopalganj
Sadar Upazila, said that the maximum yield of 3 and a half tons could be obtained
by cultivating traditional Aman paddy. This paddy ripens in the last week of
November. I planted there in Binadhan-16 July. This paddy ripened at the
beginning of this month. We are harvesting. This variety of rice has yielded 6
tons per hectare. Along with bumper yield, we are able to sell hay at higher
prices. By cultivating this short-lived rice, we are benefiting from 3 to 4
crops per year on the same land.
Mahatab Uddin, a farmer of the same village, said that the
yield of this rice is good. Rice production takes less time. Rice is thin. This
paddy is being sold at a slightly higher price in the market. So in the future, we will cultivate this profitable rice.
Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Devdas Mallick said,
Binadhan-16 has a short life span and high yield. The farmer started cultivation
5 years ago by taking this variety from the Gopalganj Bina sub-center. They save
the rice seeds and increase the paddy crop every year. This increases their
income. So this rice variety has become popular among farmers.
Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, in charge of the Bina Gopalganj sub-centre,
said that we are doing field research for the development of farmers and
agriculture. Our efforts to commercialize agriculture are hampered. In this
case, we are also getting positive responses from the farmers. So farmers are
increasing their income with our seeds, technology, advice, and training.
DD Gopalganj Agricultural Extension Dr. Aurobindo Kumar Roy
said, thanks to Binadhan-16, farmers can grow 3 to 4 crops a year on one land.
As a result, they are benefiting financially. Bina's cropping system is being
expanded through demonstration. By adopting this technology, farmers are
benefiting from more successful results.
Director General of Bangladesh Atomic Agriculture Research
Institute Dr. Mirza Mofazzal Islam said, we want to double the income of
farmers by increasing crop intensity by 2030. We are working towards changing
the socio-economic conditions of farmers by increasing their income through
year-round crop cultivation. Therefore, we are providing techniques and
technology to grow 3 crops on 2 cropland and 4 crops on 3 cropland by keeping
soil fertility intact by encouraging farmers to plant Binadhan-16.
On the other hand, the flood-affected farmers in the Sunamganj
district of Bhati township are now relieved by the harvest of Aman. They are
thinking that Agrahayan's Aman paddy will satisfy Karthik's hunger.
Aman cultivation is also done on the mentioned land in
Sunamganj district, the main borough. This year Aman cultivation has been done
on 82 thousand 215 hectares of land in the district. The Aman paddy harvesting
festival has started in different regions in Agrahayana.
Relatively high areas of the district are 14 thousand 625 in
Doarabazar, 12 thousand 955 in Chatak, 11 thousand 610 in Sunamganj Sadar, 9
thousand 555 in Jagannathpur, 8 thousand 755 in Bishwambharpur, 6 thousand 335
in Tahirpur, 4 thousand 570 in Dharmapasha, 4 thousand 210 in Shantiganj, 2
thousand 725 in Dirai, 2 thousand 130 hectares of land in Shalla and 4 thousand
545 hectares of land in Jamalganj have been cultivated with Aman paddy.
BRRI-49 and BR-22 varieties of paddy have been cultivated
the most in the district this year. The yield of BRRI-49 rice was 50 to 55
maunds per acre (one acre in three cares) and BR was 40 to 45 maunds per acre.
The farmers said that everything was threatened by the
flood, and they are looking for the courage to turn around with the harvest of
Aman.
Bimal Chandra Som, deputy director of the district
agriculture extension department, said that the paddy harvesting of 20,100
hectares of Aman land has been completed till Thursday. As the weather is
favorable, the production of 1 thousand 100 hectares of land has been more than
the target this time. In all, the total production will be 3 lakh tons of
paddy. Locals believe that when the paddy harvest is done well, Haore Kartik
will meet the hunger of Agrahayan.
