Tea workers have joined their work in 24 tea gardens of
Habiganj with a new wage of Tk 170 per day. After 19 days of work stoppage and
strike for the demand, the workers joined the work in garden from Sunday
(August 28, 2022) morning. Tea leaves are picked from the tea plant. Going to
the factory, in this situation, there is excitement among the garden authorities
and the workers.
General workers said that on August 27, there was a meeting with the honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the tea garden owners. In the meeting, a new daily wage has been fixed at Tk 170. After the announcement of this news, the tea garden workers of Habiganj expressed their opinion to return to work. Accordingly, the workers joined the work with respect to the Prime Minister. Here the expectation of the workers is that they should not be deprived of their fair rights.
On Sunday morning (August 28, 2022), resident of Chandpur
tea plantation in Chunarughat district, Acting General Secretary of Bangladesh
Tea Workers Union Nirpen Pal said, the workers have returned to work in the
plantation out of respect for the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. I
express my gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for fixing the new wages.
Workers are happy with the new wages.
It is to be noted that the workers went on strike for two
hours daily from August 9 to 11 to collect 300 taka wages. On Thursday (August
11, 2022) evening, the officials of the departmental labor office located in
Srimangal sat in a meeting with 10 labor leaders of Habiganj, but the
discussion was not fruitful. So the tea workers called for a continuous strike
from Saturday (August 13, 2022). The workers went on strike till August 27 to
realize their demands. Finally, the strike ended with the announcement of a new
daily wage of Tk 170.
