The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ordered a four-month
suspension in exports and re-exports of wheat and wheat flour originating from
India, the world's second biggest producer of the grain, state news agency WAM
said on Wednesday(15 June, 2022).
The Gulf nation's economy ministry cited interruptions to
global trade flows as the reason for its move, but added that India had
approved exports of wheat to the UAE for domestic consumption.
India is exporting wheat to the UAE to meet its domestic
demand. Some analysts believe that the war in Ukraine has affected food
supplies. Therefore, Abu Dhabi has taken this decision to ensure that the price
does not increase in the country's market.
India had on May 14 imposed a ban on wheat exports to meet
domestic demand. Wheat prices in Europe and West Asia began to rise as a result
of New Delhi's decision in the midst of the Ukraine war. Several countries and the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) have already requested India to reconsider
its decision. However, wheat has been provided to the countries with which the
agreement has already been signed. India has also said it will not cut off
wheat supplies to certain countries to ensure food security. India has exported
4,69,202 tonnes of wheat to the UAE since May 14, despite the imposition of
sanctions.
