On October 16, World Food Day 2020 was celebrated in Bangladesh as well as all over the world. King Letsie of Lesotho, an FAO Goodwill Ambassador, described the 2020 World Food Day theme (“Grow, nourish, sustain, together. Our actions are our future”), as a clarion call for greater collaboration to build more resilient food systems, and “defeat the scourge of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition”.
The day has been observed in Bangladesh at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). On this occasion, the Ministry of Agriculture undertook various programs including international seminars, technical sessions, public awareness raising activities. An international seminar was organized at a hotel in the capital on the occasion of the day. On the occasion of World Food Day, President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages.
In his message, President Mohammad Abdul Hamid said that agriculture has been considered as an important regulator of our development since time immemorial. Apart from ensuring food and nutrition to the people, agriculture also provides raw materials for various consumer goods including creation of employment and income opportunities. In the overall sense, agriculture is of immense importance in reducing poverty and advancing economic development. It was from this realization that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the greatest Bengali nation of all time, took all the groundbreaking steps in the reconstruction of the war-torn country with the utmost importance. Following the path shown by the Father of the Nation, the present government is continuously implementing various practical steps for the development of agriculture. This has led to exemplary development in agriculture. Apart from crops, great success has also been achieved in the animal meat sector.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the present Awami League government has taken and implemented various agri-friendly policies and practical steps for the development of agriculture in the last 11 and a half years following the plans and activities of the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. As a result, groundbreaking success has been achieved in the agriculture of Bangladesh. Achieving self-sufficiency in food production as well as sustainable agricultural growth has been ensured. Bangladesh is now the leading country in the world in the production of field crops, fruits, vegetables as well as animal meat in the field of large scale agriculture.
