A shipment of corn from the United States has arrived at the Chittagong port. The unloading of the corn shipment began at 11:30 am on Wednesday at the Confidence Cement Ghat in Sadarghat. American corn arrived in Bangladesh after about seven and a half years.
The cost of importing this shipment of about 57,855 tons was 14.2 million dollars, or about 175 million taka. The shipment was imported by three animal feed manufacturing companies: Nahar Agro Group, Paragon Group, and Nourish Poultry and Hatchery Limited. Earlier, on July 3, 2018, a shipment of 54,000 tons was brought by Ag Agro Industries Limited of Sripur.
After a long break, the importing companies organized an event titled ‘The Return of US Corn to Bangladesh’ at the Confidence Cement Ghat to mark the import of corn from the United States. Erin Covert, Agricultural Attaché of the US Embassy in Bangladesh, was present at the event.
Erin Covert said at the event, “These corns were produced in the 2025-26 crop season. After a long break, US corn has arrived in Bangladesh. We guarantee the quality and supply system of the corn.”
A press release from the US Embassy said that the shipment was sent from the Vancouver port in the US state of Washington. This supply has enabled animal feed manufacturers in Bangladesh to use high-quality US corn as a reliable source of animal nutrition. The corn was exported from the US by the United Grain Corporation, one of the country’s leading grain exporters.
According to customs sources, the cost of importing the shipment from the US to Chittagong Port was $246 per ton. The price of corn imported from Brazil at about the same time was $251-260 per ton. That is, US corn was imported at a lower price than Brazilian corn.
The corn shipment was brought on a ship named MV Beltocchio. The large ship, which is at the outer anchorage of the port, is gradually transferred to a smaller ship and brought to the Confidence Cement wharf in Sadarghat. Then, the corn shipment is loaded onto a truck from the small ship with the help of a crane. From there, it will be taken to the importer's warehouse.
