Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has decided to import
rice privately to keep the market normal. He said the Food Planning and
Consumption Committee (FPMC) meeting on Monday (June 6, 2022) had decided to
import rice privately to keep the market stable.
He said a summary of the decision taken at the meeting would
be sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina soon and then the next course of action
would be decided. He made the remarks in response to a question from reporters
in his office in the Secretariat on Monday. This information was given in a
notification of the Ministry of Food.
The food minister said discussions have been held on how to
bring rice duty free. This will ensure that farmers, markets and others are not
harmed. However, the final decision in this regard will come from the Hon'ble
Prime Minister.
Regarding the ongoing campaign, Sadhan Chandra Majumder said
that the consumers have started getting the benefits of the campaign. The
ongoing crackdown on illegal hoarders, even if imported privately, will
continue.
Earlier, a virtual meeting of FPMC was held under the
chairmanship of Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives
Minister Md. Tajul Islam, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Fisheries and
Livestock Minister Sh. M. Rezaul Karim and State Minister for Disaster
Management and Relief Enamur Rahman spoke on the occasion.
The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of NBR, Senior
Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Secretary of the Cabinet Division
(Coordination and Reforms) and Secretary of the Ministry of Food.
