Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has decided to import rice privately to keep the market normal. He said the Food Planning and Consumption Committee (FPMC) meeting on Monday (June 6, 2022) had decided to import rice privately to keep the market stable.

He said a summary of the decision taken at the meeting would be sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina soon and then the next course of action would be decided. He made the remarks in response to a question from reporters in his office in the Secretariat on Monday. This information was given in a notification of the Ministry of Food.

The food minister said discussions have been held on how to bring rice duty free. This will ensure that farmers, markets and others are not harmed. However, the final decision in this regard will come from the Hon'ble Prime Minister.

Regarding the ongoing campaign, Sadhan Chandra Majumder said that the consumers have started getting the benefits of the campaign. The ongoing crackdown on illegal hoarders, even if imported privately, will continue.
