The price of imported rice has decreased by Tk 5 to Tk 7 per
kg depending on the type. Last Saturday (September 3, 2022) the price of rice
started to decrease from the morning.
288 truckloads of rice imported through Hili land port have
been cleared as the government reduced the duty on rice imported from India
from 25 percent to 5 percent. As the released rice is sold in various wholesale
markets of the country, the price of rice has started to fall.

Commissioner Md. Kamrul Hasan told reporters in his office, "In the
previous circular issued by the Customs Department, rice imported from India
was taxed at 25 percent. The Food Department urged importers to import rice as
the price of rice suddenly increased due to hoarders and assured them that the
tax on rice would be reduced.
Md. Harul Or Rashid, president of Hili Land Port Import Exporters Association, said, "According to the assurance of the Food Department, 7 importers of Dinajpur Hili Land Port opened LC in the first week of August to import rice from India. According to the LC, about 9,500 tonnes of rice was imported from India in 288 trucks from August 25 to 28. But the Heli land port customs authorities prevented the release of the rice unless the 25 percent duty imposed earlier was paid. When the issue was published in various newspapers, the amount was reduced to 5 percent in a virtual discussion between the Food Department and the Finance Ministry. As a result, from last September 1, the process of redemption started at Chal Hili Land Port Panama Port.
From Saturday morning, the freed rice was released to the
wholesale market by trucks in different districts of the country. According to
the source, the leaders of Hili Import Exporters Association said that the rice
market has decreased from 5 to 7 Tk per kg. As a result, Sarna rice was sold at
Tk 57 per kg, but last Saturday it was available in the retail market at Tk 50
per kg. Miniket rice is sold at Tk 70 per kg but it is available at Tk 65. In
this way, according to the type of rice, each rice is being sold at a reduction
of 5 to 7 per kg.
Rice importer Shah Alam said that they are releasing their
imported rice in the market with little profit. He assured that the rice market
will come within the purchasing power of the buyers in a short time as they
have released the imported rice in the market as per the advice of the Food
Department.
