Soufflet Malt Ethiopia is our first malt house running on 100% green energy

Soufflet Malt Ethiopia is our first malt house running on 100% green energy

Reducing carbon emissions is a key societal issue. By 2030, we aim to reduce our carbon emissions by 50%. ‍

As part of our strategy, we have developed the first barley malting plant in Ethiopia that runs exclusively on green energy. It became operational in 2021 and relies on a local supply chain for its malting barley. To ensure the site’s energy supply, numerous solutions were studied and the choice was finally made to use electricity from hydroelectric dams.

The chosen solution had to meet two challenges: minimizing our environmental impact as much as possible and securing our continuous need for electricity to ensure the operation of equipment and the production of heat for the entire site. This energy, combined with the use of heat pumps, is the main source of heating for the malt house. Cooling is also provided by these same pumps without any additional energy consumption, thus preserving electricity.

Our malt house in Ethiopia is the first in the world to be carbon neutral*

*excluding alternative solutions necessary to supply the malt house with energy during potential power cuts.
