The government made the announcement on Monday (May 3, 2021), according to Yahoo News. According to the Express Tribune, the country's Finance Minister Mr. Shawkat Tarin has instructed the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) to change the pricing system. He thinks that in the present system, the prices of essential commodities are being shown extra. According to the report, PBS is under pressure as the prices of wheat, flour and sugar have doubled in less than three years. Under these circumstances, the country's National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC) decided to import 4 million metric tons of wheat. A brief review of the matter will be presented to the Cabinet for formal approval. According to PBS sources, the government has imported 3.6 million tonnes of wheat in the first nine months of the current financial year. The country now has less than four lakh tonnes of wheat stocks. The total annual demand of wheat in Pakistan is about 29 million tons. Source: Online/SZK
