District Agriculture Extension Department sources said that the target of potato cultivation has been set in 37,917 hectares of land in the district during the season of 2019-20, but cultivation has been done on 38,325 hectares. Which is 408 hectare extra than the target. Potatoes have been produced in the area of 9 lakh 46 thousand 700 MT.
Potato is the best quality agricultural product for vegetables. It contains a lot of sugars. According to soil quality, the soil of Joypurhat is good for cultivating potatoes. Due to the weather and natural problems of potato cultivation, there has been a bumper yield of potatoes this time. Farmers are happy that the prices of potatoes are good. For storing potatoes, there are 16 cold storages with capacity of about 1.5 lakh MT.
The Agriculture Department also said that the Deputy Assistant Agricultural Officers provide regular monitoring and advice to the farmers, with training at the farmer level to make potato cultivation successful in the district.
The BADC provided improved varieties of potato seeds to the farmers and in February advised the farmers at the field level to provide regular advice to farmers at the field to ensure that the potato fields were not damaged in the cold stream flowing over the district, said the District Agriculture Extension Department. Countries are Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Nepal and Russia. Although potato is being supplied to various regions of the country after the harvesting of potatoes, the process of delivering potatoes outside the country has not been possible due to coronavirus due to lack of communication around the world. Besides, the price of potato in the market due to the distribution of potatoes along with the food items of the government.
Jaipurhat district, which is known as the ancient Barindra region, is cultivating potatoes in more than the target area. Last year, potatoes were cultivated on 42,530 hectares of land. Potato production in this is 8 lakh 15 thousand MT. Farmers cultivate more potatoes in the district such as guanola, musica, diamond, asterix, cardinal, and roseata. This potato is supplied to various places of the country to meet the demand of the district.
