This time 50,000 tons of rice is being bought from India. However, this rice will come from Mumbai, India. The Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement on Wednesday (December 9, 2020) approved a proposal in this regard.
Last week, the procurement committee approved a proposal to import 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice from Birbhum, India. Mumbai rice will cost 99 paise less per kg than Birbhum.
The proposal was approved at a meeting of the virtual procurement committee chaired by Law Minister Anisul Haque. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal could not attend the meeting as he was on sick leave in Singapore.
After the meeting, Additional Secretary to the Cabinet Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal told reporters online that the rice would be purchased for the current fiscal year 2020-21. The price of rice per ton is 404.35 US dollars. The total price of 50 thousand tons is 2 crore 2 lakh 17 thousand 500 US dollars. The price in Bangladeshi Tk. is 171 crore 44 lakh 44 thousand. The price of rice in Bangladeshi currency is Tk. 34.28 per kg.
