Commerce Minister Mr. Tipu Munshi has promised to ensure fair prices of all daily commodities including edible oil. He said the government has taken all possible steps to ensure stockpiling, supply and fair prices of daily necessities in the country. Do not let traders take the opportunity to deceive ordinary consumers.
The Commerce Minister made the remarks at a briefing after a meeting with traders at the Secretariat on Sunday (January 24, 2021) titled 'Discussion on Market Situation of Edible Oil'. After a meeting of about an hour and a half with the businessmen, the Commerce Minister briefed the journalists. Although the traders were present at the time, none of them was given a chance to speak except one. The traders themselves, however, did not show interest in speaking.
Tariff Commission Chairman Munshi Shahabuddin Ahmed, Director General of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department Bablu Kumar Saha, Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute Director Md. Obaidul Azam, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) Chairman Brigadier General Md. Ariful Hasan and Meghna Group Chairman Mostafa Kamal, representatives of various intelligence agencies and business leaders were present at the meeting.
The Commerce Minister said the prices of imported goods would be ensured in line with the international market prices. For this a high level committee is holding regular meetings. Mr. Tipu Munshi commented that the price of oil in the international market fluctuates in the country as well. "I am trying to solve the problem by going deeper," he said. Arrangements are being made to sell all brands of open edible oil in consumer packs and bottles. This will make it easier to identify the brand and prevent adulteration. The Ministry of Industry is working on this.
Responding to a question from reporters, the Commerce Minister said traders have been advised to import and stockpile adequate daily necessities ahead of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. Apart from this, daily commodities will be sold at affordable prices like every year through the government selling company Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
This time the sales of the product will be almost three times of the previous year. During the meeting, the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission said that the supply system of edible oil can be made more effective if the provisions of the Order of Marketing and Distributor of Essential Products, 2011 are followed.
