Farmers are stockpiling straw like paddy in the hope of further increase in prices. The haze of making haystacks in the houses of the farmers has now fallen. Only marginal farmers are selling hay to cover the cost of the next crop. Traders from the farmer's house brought the straw to the city and are now selling it at almost double the price.
According to the Rajshahi Department of Agricultural Extension, paddy has been cultivated in 77,570 hectares of land in the district during the last transplanting season. 1 hectare is equal to 7.47 bighas. One bigha of paddy straw is being sold from the farmer's house for 4500 Tk. As such, the paddy farmers of Rajshahi got 261 crore 79 lakh 87 thousand 500 Tk. of straw with the paddy.
Rajshahi Agricultural Extension Department Deputy Director Mohammad Shamsul Haque said Rajshahi's BRRI-51 Swarna paddy straw is very good. This straw is mainly used as fodder. The straw has been destroyed due to floods in many parts of the country. This time the straw has also been damaged due to heavy rains in Aus season. In this situation, the farmers are collecting hay from wherever they can. The demand for this has increased. Prices have also gone up. This time both paddy and straw are profitable.
