A large number of farmers under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) surrounded the Fazilka Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office last week. They do so in protest of alleged exploitation by private traders while buying basmati at the Fazilka grain market.
Master Boota Singh, state press secretary, BKU (Kadian) and Harish Nadha, president, BKU (Dakaunda), alleged private traders had made a cartel and were buying the paddy at Rs 100 to 150 less than the actual price, causing financial losses to farmers.
They alleged the produce of parmal variety was being rejected by procurement agencies on the pretext of hybrid variety. Farmers also alleged paddy of some influential persons was being purchased without any consideration.
