In Habiganj district, 95% of BRRI rice yielded as expected. This information was obtained on Wednesday (November 22, 2023) morning in Charhamua village of Habiganj Sadar Upazila during the field day of this crop. Later, a gathering was held with the devotees present.
Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Regional Office Habiganj Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Mamunur Rashid said that due to climate change, many varieties of rice in Bangladesh are on the verge of extinction. But the hope is that new varieties are being invented with the change of time. Farmers should be encouraged to cultivate new varieties of rice. He said that the population of Bangladesh is increasing. Along with this, the demand for food is increasing.
The amount of agricultural land is decreasing under the pressure of overpopulation. Keeping that in mind, we have to increase food production by cultivating improved varieties of rice to meet the additional food demand. And the farmers have to be motivated in this regard. As a result of climate change, there has been an outbreak of blast disease in the area.
In the last season, the farmers of the area were affected by this disease by cultivating BR 28 and BR 29. So farmers will benefit more if they cultivate disaster tolerant BR 96, BR hybrid 3, and BR hybrid 5. Because this paddy will not get spoiled easily even if it gets submerged in rainwater. Moreover, BR hybrid 3, and BR hybrid 5 are affected by blast disease very less. So the farmers are encouraged to cultivate this rice.
