Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen met with Turkish President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday (September 16, 2020) to reaffirm his commitment to take relations between the two countries to new heights. Mr. Erdogan has agreed to attend the D-8 summit in Dhaka early next year.
Held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, the meeting focused on new initiatives in the exchange of commercial goods, sending more delegations and participating in fairs and exhibitions. They called the ongoing cooperation in education, culture and military sector strong. During the discussion, both expressed satisfaction over the existing friendly relations.
Turkish President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to attend the D-8 summit in Dhaka early next year. In this context, he emphasized on the expansion of D-8 by adding new member states. He emphasized the importance of enhancing trade relations between the two countries. This includes investing in new products, textiles, medicines and other sectors, avoiding existing tariff barriers. He also hoped that necessary steps would be taken to ensure participation in trade fairs in both the countries. The President of Turkey proposed to allocate the necessary land for the construction of a modern hospital in Bangladesh with the financial assistance of Turkey.
The President of Turkey highly praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to the persecuted and distressed Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. He expressed the view that he would stand by Bangladesh in all possible bilateral and international issues. He assured to send more necessary assistance from Turkey in the current situation of COVID-19.
On the eve of the inauguration of the newly constructed Turkish Embassy in Dhaka at the earliest after the end of the epidemic COVID-19, President Mr. Erdogan expressed his hope to visit Bangladesh. He expressed satisfaction over the high level FOC being held at regular intervals between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries. In the near future, both sides agreed to set up a forum to conduct regular talks at a higher level.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu was present at the meeting.
