Although the import of rice has been stopped for a long time, the import of boiled rice from India (non-basmati) has started again through Hili land port of Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur. On Saturday (January 9, 2021), three Indian trucks loaded with 112 metric tons of rice entered the port and the formality of rice import began.
It is known that the rice was first imported by Messrs. Jagadish Chandra Roy, an importer from Naogaon with the permission of the government. The import of rice through Hili land port was stopped from May 30, 2019.
Even in the busy season, there is instability in the rice market in the country. To curb this rise in prices, the government took a policy decision to import rice privately from India. In this situation, importers from different parts of the country, including Hili land port, appealed to the government to import rice from India.
With the permission of 29 importers, LCs were set up to import rice from neighboring India. On Saturday afternoon, Messrs. Jagdish Chandra Roy, an importer from Naogaon, imported 112 metric tonnes of Swarna 5 varieties of rice through Hili land port. This is the first consignment to arrive in the country.
Shripad, a representative of the importer Messrs. Jagdish Chandra Roy, said, "Our company has got permission to import 10,000 metric tonnes of rice from India." As part of this, 112 metric tons of rice entered the country out of the 600 metric tons of our first shipment through Hili land port on Saturday. He thinks that the market price will come down if the import of rice starts completely.
Harun Ur Rashid, president of the Hili Land Port Imports and Exporters Group, said rice was being imported from India at US Dollar 356 per metric tonne. 29-30 Tk per kg. If 4 taka of government revenue is added, 34 Tk per kg will fall. Other importers have also set up LCs to import rice through this port. Their rice will also come to the market in a few days.
