In the last 7 days, 287 metric tons of onions have been imported through this port. On the night of March 19 (Friday), the first consignment of 42 and a half metric tons of onion in two trucks entered Benapole port. Earlier, the Indian government stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh on September 14, 2019, citing the production crisis. This time the import price of onion has been fixed at 140 USD dollars per metric ton. The government has to pay 10 per cent duty on the import price to get the goods released. At present, buyers are expecting lower prices in the market as onions are imported this way. Benapole Port Deputy Director Mamun Kabir Tarafdar said 287 metric tonnes of onions were imported in a week from March 19 to March 25. All concerned have been instructed to expedite the release of imported onion traders. Source: Online/SZK
