The cargo ship reached the Italian port of Ravenna in 20 days after crossing the sea from Chittagong with bicycles and readymade garments. The ship arrived at its destination last Sunday (February 27, 2022), the ship's representatives said.
The MV Songa Cheetah, a small container ship, set sail from Chittagong Port to the Italian port of Ravenna at around 3 pm on February 7. This was the first direct container shipment from Chittagong to Italy.
The ship left Karnafuli and passed through the Bay of Bengal and passed in front of the port of Hambantota in Sri Lanka. It then reaches the Italian port via the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea.
In order to take goods to Italy for so many days, first the feeder ship was taken from Chittagong to Singapore or Colombo port of Sri Lanka. After receiving the booking from there, it was handed over to the big ship going to Europe. It was then taken to Italy from major European ports. It took more time and cost. Now it is easier to take container goods directly to the feeder ship in less time and at lower cost.
The new service was launched by Calypso Compania de Navigation, a subsidiary of Reef Line, a freight forwarding company in Italy. Abul Kalam Azad, director of Refine Worldwide Logistics Limited, a Bangladeshi company based on Reef Line, said the first journey was a success. Even if it takes 20 days for the first time, it will not take more than 16-17 days on the new route. The ship will return from Chittagong port on March 21 to load the goods.
