Thakurgaon is now the highest wheat producing district in the country in terms of cultivation and production. In the last few seasons, Thakurgaon has had a good yield of wheat. The government is also buying wheat from this district the most this time. Concerned parties say this is good news for agriculture and farmers in the region.
According to the planting and production target division of the Department of Agricultural Extension, in the last fiscal year 2019-2020, wheat was planted in 3 lakh 42 thousand 252 hectares of land in the country. The production per hectare was 3.64 metric tons. He produced 12 lakh 46 thousand 332 metric tons. In Thakurgaon, wheat was planted on 50,650 hectares of land and 1 lakh 89 thousand 938 metric tons of wheat was produced.
In the current 2020-21 financial year, the target for wheat cultivation has been set at 3 lakh 55 thousand 364 hectares of land in the country. The Department of Agricultural Extension estimates that 12 lakh 98 thousand 753 metric tons of wheat will be produced at the rate of 3.65 metric tons per hectare. According to the Department of Agriculture Extension, the target for wheat cultivation in the current season is 50,650 hectares in Thakurgaon. Produced 1 lakh 89 thousand 938 metric tons.
However, according to the Thakurgaon office of the Department of Agricultural Extension, wheat planting has been targeted at 50,650 hectares of land in the district but it has been planted at 47,450 hectares. Wheat has been produced 1 lakh 94 thousand 184 metric tons. Which is the highest in the country in terms of cultivation and production.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to buy one lakh metric tonnes of wheat at Tk 28 per kg in the country this year.
The food department has started buying wheat across the country from April 1. This activity will continue till June 30. According to the Food Department's division of upazila-based wheat procurement, the government has set a target of purchasing a maximum of 15,765 metric tonnes of wheat from Thakurgaon district this year. 7,684 metric tons of wheat is being purchased from Pabna, 7,515 from Rajshahi and 7,201 metric tons from Chapainawabganj.
Last year, 12,310 metric tons of wheat was supposed to be bought from Thakurgaon, but 24,061 metric tons were bought. And in 2019, 50,000 metric tons of wheat was bought across the country. 6,609 metric tons of wheat was purchased from Thakurgaon district. In these two years also the highest quantity of wheat was purchased from Thakurgaon.
District Food Controller Monirul Islam said the district has the highest wheat production and the food department is buying more wheat from the district than other districts. Abu Hossain, deputy director of the district agricultural extension department, said the climate in the area was conducive to wheat production. Besides, due to the efforts of the agriculture department, the interest of the farmers in wheat cultivation has not diminished.
