In the list of products imported by City Group there are more daily necessities

]Mr. Biswajit Saha, Director (Corporate and Regulatory Affairs), City Group, Bangladesh.[/caption] In the last fiscal year 2020-21, City Group has imported goods and raw materials worth near about USD 1.5 billion or about Tk 12,000 crore. This import list has more essential products. These daily necessities are processed by importing raw or raw materials in their own factories. City Group started its journey in 1972 with the help of entrepreneur Mr. Fazlur Rahman. The group started with mustard oil production more than two decades ago. After that, City Group went into large business expansion. And in the last two decades, new industries have been added to the group's fleet. At present, City Group has businesses in various sectors including edible oil, sugar refining, tea gardening, shipbuilding, flour milling, oilseed threshing, packaging, economic zones and ship management. The main brand of the group is 'Tir'. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank Group, last year released a list of companies that are leading the private sector in terms of revenue. The list includes City Group as a multi-billion dollar annual business. City Group has two economic zones. The group has set up a city economic zone on the banks of the Shitalakshya river in Rupganj, Narayanganj and an economic zone called Hosendi Economic Zone in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj. New factories are being set up in these two economic zones. City Group now has 35 industries. Imported products are being marketed after processing under these industries. Products of various City Group companies are imported through Chittagong and Mongla seaports and Benapole land port. City Group's imports have exceeded hundreds of millions of dollars over three years. City Group is providing more than 30 percent of the demand for daily necessities in Bangladesh. Besides meeting the domestic demand, we are also exporting various products including soymeal and edible oil, said Mr. Biswajit Saha, Director (Corporate and Regulatory Affairs), City Group. City Group has been bringing in more than Tk 2,500 crore in revenue to the government for several years. In the last financial year, the amount of revenue was Tk 2,600 crore. City Group has so far employed 25,000 people. Next year, six factories will be launched in the City Group economic zone. The investment in these factories will be USD 800 million. About three thousand people will be newly employed. If new factories are set up, the import of intermediate raw materials required by those factories will also increase. Source: Online/SZK
