Why construction of silos is important for food grain storage in Bangladesh

All kinds of problems of agriculture in Bangladesh one of the problems is proper storage of agricultural products. This problem is more in the case of food grains. If there is a bumper yield of a crop, there is no proper system at the farmer level to preserve it, similarly the opportunity is limited at the government level. At the business level, the opportunity is used by the businessmen for the purpose of high profit. For example; then the traders reduce interest in buying that product. As a result, the price of the product decreases. The price of the farmer's cultivation does not rise.

Even if the government fixes a reasonable price, the government does not have proper warehouses or silos to store the product. And there is no obligation on the traders. Farmers face serious losses. On the other hand, when the product leaves the farmer's house, the price of that product increases. The farmer has to buy the product at a higher price.

If the yield of any product is low in any year, then it has to be imported from abroad to meet the demand of that product. Then the few companies that get the government permission to import those products, they use various strategies to achieve their high profits. As a result, farmers and low-income consumers continue to be exploited.

In view of the pandemic situation, the government feels that there is a need to increase the capacity of food grains in the country. Therefore, the government has taken a plan to increase the food grain storage capacity of the country to 35 lakh tonnes by 2030.

Food grains can be stored in silo for a long time. It will also eradicate the existing natural disaster problems caused to food storage. Besides, rice produced in the eastern part of the country including Brahmanbaria can be collected and stored very easily. If required, rice can be easily imported or exported to seven states of India including Tripura.

According to sources, there are currently five large silos, 13 central silos (CSDs) and 631 local silos (LSDs) in the country. The capacity of these silos or food warehouses is about 20 lakh tonnes.

To facilitate the country’s farmers, the government is going to construct eight modern food silos which are expected to be completed by 2025. Besides, three silos are being constructed in different districts. Three of the eight silos are being made for wheat and five for rice storage. These silos have a total capacity of 5.35 lakh tonnes.
