Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Dhaka H.E Professor Sudharshan Seneviratne has urged Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to invest in tourism and agriculture. He made the call during a courtesy call on Mr. Md. Jashim Uddin, President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) on Sunday (April 3, 2022).

Speaking at a meeting at the FBCCI office, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner said his country was providing attractive opportunities for foreign investors, including tax breaks. Therefore, Bangladeshi entrepreneurs can benefit by investing in the vast uncultivated agricultural land of Sri Lanka.

Seeking Bangladesh's cooperation in developing the country's tourism and shipping sector, Ambassador Professor Sudharshan Seneviratne said the port of Colombo now has four docks with modern facilities. Bangladesh can take advantage of this. He urged the cargo ships to go to Colombo for this.

Sri Lanka, once one of the most powerful countries in South Asia, is currently going through a severe economic crisis due to debt. Along with the fuel oil crisis, prices of all essential commodities have risen in the country. It has created mass protests there. A state of emergency has recently been declared to stop the protests. The army has been deployed in the field. In such a situation, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner called for investment in the country.

During the meeting, FBCCI President Mr. Md. Jashim Uddin proposed to sign a free trade agreement between the two countries. He said the agreement would make it easier to increase bilateral trade and investment. Most of Bangladesh's trade is with the United States and the European Union (EU), but it is more profitable to do business with neighboring countries.
