The UK is now suffering from the highest rate of inflation
since the 1980s. Last October, the country's food inflation rate exceeded 11
percent. Naturally, the price of food in the country's restaurants has
increased a lot. This price hike has been going on since the pandemic.
According to a report in The Guardian, after 2020, the price
of all popular foods like coffee, and snacks increased by 26 percent in that
country. Restaurant officials are struggling to cope with such increased
expenses. Many are fearing the closure of businesses.
Around 740 companies are represented by UK Hospitality.
According to the Guardian, about 18 percent of the total cost of restaurants is
linked to high inflation. In other words, consumers are buying popular foods at
higher prices.
A look at menu prices at roadside restaurants showed that from October 2020, half a chicken at Nandos chicken restaurants would cost £8.50 (a 26 percent rise) from £6.75, while 10 chicken wings would cost £11.75 (22 percent) instead of £9.60. increase) and a chocolate cake dessert rose from £4.15 to £4.75 (a 14 percent increase).
The price of a spaghetti chorizo carbonara meal at central
London Italian restaurant GG has risen from £11.70 to £14.25 over the same
period. That is, the price has increased up to 22 percent compared to before. A
chicken and prosciutto salad has risen from £12.25 to £14.50 (an increase of 18
percent) and sweet potato fries have risen from £3.90 to £4.25, a 9 percent
increase. Over the same period, halloumi fries at around 25 major Greek
restaurant chains rose from £5.95 to £6.95, about 17 percent higher.
Analysis by Ashima Coffee Company earlier this year showed
that between August 2021 and July 2022, prices of all popular coffees rose 22
percent. The price of a small Starbucks espresso rose by 2.20 percent (a 22
percent increase) from £1.80. The price of a Pret a Manger medium cappuccino
rose from £2.75 to £3.05 (an increase of 11 percent).
Last July, the popular food chain company McDonald's
announced that it had increased the price of a cheeseburger from 99 pence to
£1.19, an increase of 20 percent. According to the company, this is the first
price increase in 14 years.
