The world's best raw sweet mango cultivar, Green Mango, has
made its first breakthrough. Agriculture officials have succeeded in verifying
the utility at Ratil Horticulture Center of Kashiani Upazila of Gopalganj. This
mango is sweet in its raw state. Ripeness increases the sweetness and taste.
Mango leaves the tree in October-November. In various countries of the world
including Taiwan, and Thailand, this mango is sold at the price of Tk 500 to 700
per kg in Bangladeshi currency. There are no mangoes in the market since
October-November. So this green mango of Nabi variety will be sold for at least Tk 500
to 600 per kg in the Bangladesh market. There is a huge potential for commercial
cultivation of this mango in Bangladesh.
Aminul Islam, Deputy Director of Gopalganj Horticulture Center, said that 2 years ago, Project Director (PD) of the Nutrition Development Project through year-round fruit production. Mehdi Masud brings a shade (cutting) of the world's best raw sweet mango variety from Thailand. He gave it to us at Gopalganj Horticulture Centre. At the Horticulture Center, we combine mango seedlings collected from Thailand with indigenous mango seedlings. We make mango seedlings of that variety in the climate of Bangladesh. Then the service is done. This year the first mango has grown on that tree. No spider attack was seen on this mango tree. The disease was not observed in this mango. Each mango weighs 600 to 700 grams. This mango can be eaten raw. So this mango has been named Green Mango. When ripe, the sweetness and taste of mangoes increase manifold. 90 percent of this mango is edible. This mango contains a large amount of vitamin C and other vitamins and nutrients necessary for the human body. These mangoes can be collected from the tree in October-November.
The world's best and most appreciated raw sweet mangoes of this
variety are sold in different countries of the world at the rate of Tk 500 to
700 per kg in Bangladeshi currency. The green mangoes produced here will be
sold for at least Tk 500 per kg in the Bangladesh market. The climate of Bangladesh is
suitable for mango cultivation. We have already created a mother garden in our
horticulture center. From here we have started to send seedlings to 73
horticulture centers in the country. All the horticulture centers of the
country will have mother gardens of this mango. From here seedlings will be produced
and supplied to farmers. A farmer can earn at least Tk 5 lakh every year
excluding expenses by growing this variety of mangoes on one bigha of land. So
there is great potential for commercial cultivation of this mango in
Bangladesh.
Project Director (PD) Dr. Mehdi Masud said we will be nourished by the fruits produced in our country. To that end, the agriculture-friendly government has taken up nutrition development projects through year-round fruit production. It is being implemented by the Department of Agricultural Extension. In this project, we have selected early varieties, early varieties, seasonal varieties, and perennial varieties for mangoes. These varieties are being trailed in our 74 horticulture centers. We have verified their performance through field trials. Already we have brought about 16 mango varieties from abroad. Among them, cardamom is already being cultivated at the farmer level. This type of mango is produced 3 times a year. Cultivation of Kiuzai, Banana Mango. We collect the world's best raw sweet mango variety 'Chayan' from Thailand and bring it to Bangladesh. This breed originates from Taiwan.
Its performance has been trailed at Gopalganj Horticulture
Centre. It is named Green Mango. This green mango will bring big business
to Bangladesh in the near future. The performance of this mango was seen very
well in the trial at Gopalganj Horticulture Center. Now we have taken the
initiative to spread the cultivation of this mango at the farmer level. Because
our farming brothers can benefit by cultivating high-value mangoes. Our
Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak wants to modernize and commercialize
Bangladesh's agriculture and make it profitable. He has adopted a plan to earn
foreign currency by exporting various crops including fruits produced by our
farmers. All things considered, green mango will be a profitable variety for
farmers in Bangladesh.
PD Mehdi Masud also said that 105 saplings of this variety
of mango trees can be planted in one bigha of land. This type of mango tree is
small in size. Therefore, only 45 to 50 mango trees of other species can be
planted in one bigha. But 105 mango trees of this variety can be planted per
bigha. Yield is available after 2 to 3 years. At least 1 thousand 440 kg mango
yield can be obtained per one bigha. As Tk
500, the sale of this mango will be Tk 7 lakh 20 thousand. Excluding
expenses, the farmer can earn Tk 5 lakh in the first 2 to 3 years. The cost
will come down in the following years. Mango production will increase. This
will increase the profit of farmers. So this variety of mango is showing hope
in commercial cultivation.
