Japan suspended imports of pork and live pork from Germany on Friday (September 11, 2020) after an incident of African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in a wild boar in East Germany, the agriculture ministry said.
Last Thursday (September 10, 2020), Germany said that China and South Korea had also banned such imports because the ASF had found a dead wild boar near the Polish border.
The ministry said in a statement on Friday that Japan's move was to keep the disease at bay.
Last year, 40,240 tonnes of pork imports from Germany accounted for 3.3% of Japan's total 1.2 million tonnes of meat imports, the ministry said. Japan did not import any live pigs in 2019, down from six in 2018.
