The government is going to build 30 modern silos with the aim of drying and storing the paddy produced by buying paddy directly from farmers across the country. The total cost of the project is Tk 1,400 crore. The project will be implemented from the current time to June 2023 with full government funding. This initiative is under the modern rice silo construction project with drying, storage and other ancillary facilities of paddy in different parts of the country.
The project will be presented for final approval at the ECNEC meeting at the NEC conference room in the capital's Sher-E-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday (June 8, 2021). The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina.
The objective of the project is to provide fair price of paddy produced by purchasing paddy directly from the farmers. Increasing the capacity of 1.5 lakh metric tons in government food management, adaptation of modern technology in government food management, pesticide free stocking system will maintain the nutritional value of the crop for 2 to 3 years. One of the objectives of the project is to control the quality of stored grains through humidity and temperature control and to build safe and nutritious food management.
Katiadi in Kishoreganj, Mirzapur in Tangail, Tangail Sadar, Faridpur Sadar, Haluaghat in Mymensingh, Melandah in Jamalpur, Srivardi Upazila in Sherpur will be implemented. The project will be implemented in Brahmanbaria Sadar, Noakhali Sadar, Comilla Sadar, Dinajpur Sadar, Biral, Thakurgaon Sadar, Boda in Panchagarh, Hatibanda in Lalmonirhat, Naogaon Shibpur, Raninagar, Ishwardi in Pabna, Sherpur in Bogra and Nandigram. Khetlal of Joypurhat, Kanaighat of Sylhet, Shayestaganj of Habiganj, Sunamganj Sadar, Narail Sadar, Kumarkhali of Kushtia, Patuakhali Sadar, Kalapara, Char Fashion project areas of Bhola have been identified.
Rice sifting, sorting, drying, humidity control system and ancillary facilities every 5 thousand MT capacity, 3 paddy silos will be constructed. The silo will have truck and bulk weighing equipment, conveying, bucket elevator system additions. Silo Civil Foundation, construction of multipurpose buildings, installation of electric sub-stations, construction of boundary walls at 30 centers.
The Planning Commission said that if the project is implemented, 30 paddy silos will be constructed in different parts of the country and it will be possible to store 1.5 lakh MT of paddy in the next three years. If these silos are constructed, there will be an opportunity to buy paddy directly from the farmers throughout the year. Farmers will be easily encouraged to sell paddy in government food warehouses and get a fair price for the paddy produced. It will be possible to strengthen the food storage system by maintaining the nutritional value of the crop for 2-3 years through pesticide free storage system. With this in mind, the project will be presented at the ECNEC meeting.
The project will be presented at the ECNEC meeting on Tuesday, said Mohammad Matiur Rahman, head (additional secretary) of the Planning Commission's agriculture, water resources and rural institutions department. By implementing the project properly, the farmer will get a fair price for the paddy. Also food security will be more assured in any disaster moment.
