Although there is no paddy cultivation in the country called
Miniket, the market is profitable for Miniket rice. There are complaints that
this popular rice is made in the market, other rice is cut. However, the
businessmen have repeatedly rejected such allegations.
The government has also stated that there will be no rice
called Miniket in the market. Now traders are saying that this is a brand, if
there is no rice under this name, there will be a negative impact on the
market.
Last Tuesday (September 13, 2022), this demand was given by
the traders of packaged Miniket rice in a discussion meeting of the Directorate
of National Consumer Rights Protection. Representatives of manufacturing or
supplying companies and supershops were present at the exchange meeting held on
the prices of packaged daily commodities (rice, dal, flour, sugar, dal, salt,
etc.).
Niaz Morshed, senior manager of PRAN-RFL, said, "There are complaints that coarse rice is cut and made into Miniket rice. But there is no machine in the country to cut rice and make Miniket rice. Miniket is a brand, it has been in the market for a long time. If it is stopped now, there will be a negative impact on the market.
In response to the businessmen's statement, Director General
of Consumer Affairs Department AHM Safikuzzaman said, 'Rice is usually named
after paddy. There is no paddy called Miniket, so where does this rice come
from. It sounds like you (traders) don't know how this rice is made.
But we have information, the coarse rice is cut into small
pieces and sold in the market as Minikets at high prices. Now, since you are
not agreeing, raising objections, we will sit with the rice experts and the
food ministry. Then it will be decided.
Mahadi Faisal, the chief business officer of Supershop Sapno,
said in the meeting, "It is being complained that the supershops are
increasing the price of packaged products through collusion with the company.
But there is no chance of that happening. We are not involved in any such
activity. We want to be freed from such allegations.
In the meeting, City Group Director (Corporate and
Regulatory Affairs) Biswajit Saha said, "None of the manufacturers or
consumers increase the price of packaged products. The government decides. So,
the responsibility lies with the government.
