The use of new technology has brought many changes in the agricultural economy of the country. The next generation of many formerly agricultural families is no longer interested in this work. As a result, local farmers are cultivating their land on lease or rent. In this case, from production to marketing, a class of people is helping with various services including fertilizers, seeds, and advanced machinery. Besides tenant farming, the role of these intermediate commercial service providers in agriculture is also increasing day by day.
Last Friday (December 2, 2022), the speakers said these
things in the fourth session of the second day of the annual development
conference of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). This
conference is going on for three days at Lakeshore Hotel in Gulshan of the
capital Dhaka.
BIDS Professorial Fellow and Agricultural Economist MA Sattar Mondal presented a paper on Rural Agricultural Economics in the session presided over by BIDS Director General Vinayak Sen. Also present was Geoff Wood, Emeritus Professor of International Development at the University of Bath, UK.
MA Sattar Mandal said on the occasion, 'There are three
types of farming management in our agricultural economy. First, the production
of crops for their own needs on the family land. Second, large-scale production
of agricultural products using commercially advanced technology. Third, is the
hybrid type. In other words, local farmers cultivate by renting family land and
various services.
Agricultural Economist MA Sattar Mandal said that due to indifference
to agriculture, lack of experience in urbanization and management, etc., the
amount of household agricultural production in the country is decreasing. Due
to their absence, the rural agricultural production process is now in the hands
of middlemen. A group of them are cultivating the land on rent from the
landlord. Another group provides all types of machinery, raw materials, and
technical services in the agricultural production process.
MA Sattar Mandal said new technology has changed the previous
agricultural production process. Power tillers are now being used instead of
plowing with cows. Modern excavators have replaced the laborers who cut the
soil. As a result, a part of those who were workers earlier are renting land,
and another part is providing services for these machines and technologies.
In the event, Vinayak Sen said, 'Through today's discussion,
a new research space has been created on the management of the agricultural
economy. With the application of new knowledge and new technology in the
agricultural sector, a new service class has been created in the agricultural
sector. At the same time, landowners and farmers are also able to get more
involved in agriculture. As a result, sustainability in the agricultural
economy has increased.
