Bangladesh Poultry industry: Past & Present Desk Report: Poultry farming in Bangladesh is the process of keeping different types of birds for meat, egg, feather or sale. In Bangladesh, poultry birds are widely used for meat and egg. Now the poultry industry is progressing towards safe production every day despite limitations. Bangladesh weather is very much friendly for poultry farming. There are various kinds of poultry birds are domesticated for many years ago. As of 2017 about 300 billion taka has been invested in the poultry industry. There is an estimated 150,000 poultry farms in Bangladesh. From 2 to 4 March 2017, Poultry Science Association Bangladeshi branch held the tenth International Poultry Show and Seminar in International Convention city Bashundhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The farms annually produce 570 million tons of meat and 7.34 billion eggs. Poultry feed is made mostly from imported soybean and soy meal. Per capita consumption of meat and egg remain below the level recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO). Avian Influenza has been damaging for the poultry and associated feed industry in Bangladesh. The outbreak in 2007 closed two-thirds of all farms in Bangladesh. Presently, poultry is progressing forward towards this problem. Now poultry Farm & poultry feed industries have been developed based on poultry in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has started producing Antibiotic Growth Promoter free poultry food. They urged the government to allow local companies to produce poultry vaccines, take the backyard poultry under vaccination coverage and arrange training for the farmers as well as the concerned officials on safe food. According to a roundtable meeting last year: Fisheries and Livestock Minister Nayaron Chandra Chanda said: “The lion's share of chicken meat and eggs are being produced by the poultry industry which has created job opportunities all over the country. Therefore the welfare of the millions poultry farmers should be taken care of.” The WPSA-BB President Shamsul Arefin Khaled said: “Producing enough food for a growing population is a challenge. Fourteen of the 17 SDG goals have connections to the poultry sector, some way or other. Poultry rearing can double household income.” Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) President Moshiur Rahman said: “We can't but to increase production to feed our people. But we should concentrate to quality rather quantity and safe poultry production is one of our major goals.” Source: Online KMS/SZK
