February 13, Agronomist's Day. On this day in 1973,
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the status of first class officer
when the agriculturists entered the government service. To make the day
memorable, Bangladesh Krishibid Institution has been observing 13th February
every year since 2010 as Krishibid/ Agronomist's Day.
Agriculture is the hearts-blood of the overall economy of
Bangladesh. From time immemorial the people of this country have been relying
on agriculture to meet their basic needs including food, clothing and shelter.
During the post-independence period, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman set up various institutions for the smooth running of
agricultural education, research, extension and distribution of agricultural
inputs.
He gave utmost importance to the agriculture sector in
rebuilding the war-torn country. The present government under the leadership of
Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is implementing various activities for
the overall development of agriculture in the way shown by the Father of the
Nation. As a result, we are now self-sufficient in granular food. In addition,
mass production of vegetables and indigenous fruits is playing an important
role in meeting the daily nutritional needs at the national level.
The government has always given utmost importance to
agriculture to maintain food self-sufficiency. From 2009 to 2021, nursing research
institutes have developed 631 high yielding new varieties of different crops
and 940 technologies. From 2008-09 to date, 56 varieties of rice by BRRI, 260
varieties of different crops by BARI, 15 varieties of jute by BJRI, 9 varieties
of sugarcane by BSRI and four varieties of sugar beet, palm and stevia, 10
varieties of cotton by CDB and various varieties of cotton by BINA included 68
varieties of different crops.
Four varieties of Bt brinjal have been developed and
expanded using GMO technology and work on Bt cotton variety is in progress. The
life secrets of deshi and tosha jute have been developed and the life of more
than five hundred crops of harmful fungi has been revealed. 54 high yielding
varieties of jute and jute fiber crops have been developed and exposed, as a
result of which agricultural production has reached an unimaginable height.
Bangabandhu wanted to see Bangladesh full of golden crops
acquired in exchange for the blood of 3 million martyrs. Bangabandhu used to
say, 'If the farmer survives, the country will survive'. Therefore, he directed
Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, Bangladesh Agricultural Development
Corporation, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Bangladesh Paddy
Research Institute, Horticulture Development Board, Cotton Development Board,
Seed Certification Agency, Seed Certification Agency to ensure establishment,
renovation, development and management of agro-based institutions. The
institute created many new agricultural institutes, including the Fisheries
Development Corporation, and reorganized the old ones, inspiring young people
educated in agricultural research and technology.
