An indomitable farmer has shown success in cultivating nutritious purple potatoes after coffee, succulent dragon and vitamin C-rich malta. The farmer's name is Sanwar Hossain. The house is in Mahishmara village of Madhupur upazila of Tangail.
After graduation, Sanwar started teaching. But before the end of the year, he left it and chose agriculture as his livelihood. Pineapple is cultivated along six acres of hilly red soil as a family. He also added four acres of Malta, one acre of Dragon, three acres of coffee, Batabi lemon, Arabian date and papaya. Last time, through an agriculturist, he collected American variety of purple potato or purple potato tuber. Plant it on one acre of land. The percentage yield is two mounds. Sold at Tk 100 per kg. There was no problem in selling due to the attractive color and exceptional taste. Sanwar said he planted a variety of fruits and crops, including pineapple, giving priority to safe and organic farming, not chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The house has a cattle farm. Compost manure is made from its dung.
He said about the cultivation of purple, the land in the hilly area of Madhupur has been fallow for four months after picking pineapple from the garden. Purple can be easily planted in that land as an intermediate crop. Being drought resistant, irrigation does not require even fertilizer. There is no infestation of insects. After the potato is harvested, creeping trees are considered as good food for cattle. Nutritionist working in a private company. Now farmers like Sanwar Hossain have included purple in the list of profitable crops in the red soil of Madhupur. He has planted a variety of fruits and crops on the same land of the farm. The nutritious purple area has responded.
Madhupur Upazila Agriculture Officer Mahmudul Hasan said sweet potatoes were planted on an average of about 50 acres in Madhupur. However, this is the first time that purple variety has been planted. There is a bright prospect of commercial cultivation of purple as an intermediate or single crop. There is also an opportunity to export 100% pure food abroad. Farmers are being encouraged to cultivate. For this ‘Kandal Crop Development Project’ has been taken. Exhibition plots have also been set up for handicraft education. In addition to purple, two Ufsi varieties invented by BARI are being preferred.
