The owners of rice mills want more than Tk. 4 per kg to supply rice to government warehouses. They have informed the government that they will not be able to give rice unless they get extra price. However, the government is as firm as before. The food ministry will not increase the price of rice. If necessary, they will increase the stock of rice by importing. Meanwhile, the Food Department has invited two tenders for the import of 1 lakh tonnes of rice this month. The food ministry has also decided to import several lakh tonnes of rice if necessary. According to Food Department sources, several companies have also submitted tenders for the supply of 50,000 tonnes of rice. On the other hand, India, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam have also officially offered to supply rice to Bangladesh. According to the ministry, if imported from India, the price of rice will come down to Tk 34 per kg including duty. Imports from Thailand will cost 45 rupees per kg. In this regard, Director General of the Food Department Sarwar Mahmud said, "The collection price of paddy and rice has been fixed considering the production cost of the farmers." Aman paddy has just started to grow. The price of paddy will go down further. Then the mill owners will benefit if the government provides rice at the fixed rate. Find more... Source: Online/SZK
