GFMM desk: Farmers of Raninagar Upazila of Naogaon have now sown potatoes on more than their target land after cultivating paddy. They are expecting a bumper yield this year. The weather is favorable due to the bumper yield of mustard, wheat and corn. Meanwhile, the local agriculture office said the same possibility.
Due to no floods this year after harvesting the Ropa-Amon paddy the farmers have cultivated aromatic varieties of potatoes on Rabi cultivable arable land. At the government level agricultural ingredients and fertilizers were distributed free of cost to the farmers in time.
According to Agriculture Office sources, this year, the agriculture extension department has set target of cultivating potatoes in the 8 Union of the Upazilas during the current Rabi season. At the field level, due to the proper advice and direct technical assistance from the agricultural office of potato farmers, the potato crop is very disease free. Most of the potatoes are grown in the Upazila's Sadar, Mirat, Kashimpur and Ekdala unions.

Rahim Uddin, a farmer from Mirat village, said that this year, we cultivated potatoes on that big land. I put some seeds in the freezer and bought the rest and planted them on the ground. It looks like the potato tree is getting better this time. In the meantime I got some good price by selling potato on land. If the current market prices continue, farmers will be able to cultivate iri-burrow in full swing in the next days.
Upazila agriculture officer Agronomist Shahidul Islam said that in the current season, the improved cultivars of Cadinals, Diamonds and local varieties of potatoes have been cultivated in the upazila. It is expected that the farmers will get the yield of 5-7 MT per hectare. Already, farmers have started raising potatoes from some land and selling them. At the beginning of the season the potato prices were very good and they are still good. It is hoped that the farmers will benefit from potato production this time.
