Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) was established in 1973. The major activities of BARC are to coordinate, monitor and evaluate the research programmes of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) institute and other associate organizations. Besides, human resource development BARC also provides support to the overall activities of NARS institutes. The achievements of BARC during January 2009 to December 2015 are stated below:
BARC Act 2012 has been formulated for strengthening of agricultural research management and coordination of National Agricultural Research System (NARS)
Research Priorities in Bangladesh Agriculture and Vision Document 2030 has been prepared for undertaking R&D projects/programs
More than 50 promising technologies on crops, livestock and fisheries have been developed through implementation of Sponsored Public Goods Research (SPGR) sub-projects under NATP Phase-I. National Agricultural Display Centre has been established at BARC complex
Fifty five appropriate technologies have been disseminated to the farmers through Agricultural Technology Transfer (ATT) project under Japan Debt Cancellation Fund (JDCF) support
Prepared crop zoning maps for optimum utilization of land, soil and other natural resources for maximization of crop productivity
Developed agricultural technologies by NARS institutes through implementation of research projects under revenue budget of BARC
Fertilizer Recommendation Guide-2012 has been prepared for optimum use of fertilizer in order to achieve maximum production
Good Agricultural Practice, Post-harvest handling manual, and Crop Calendar of 10 crops have been Published under AFACI project
The production of rice and pulses were increased by 17% and 15%, respectively through the implementation of Rice and Pulses Action Plan
Under coordination of BARC and international collaboration 4 Bt brinjal varieties (resistant to insects) have been developed and released by BARI
Human Resource Development Plan-2025 has been prepared for enhancing skills and efficiency of the NARS scientists. During the period 150 PhD and 10 post-doctoral fellowship are provided to scientists
Seventy nine in country and 30 abroad PhD fellowships are provided to the NARS scientists through NATP. Besides, 10 scientists have completed their post-doctoral degrees through NATP project support § Eighteen scientists have completed their in-country PhD fellowship under revenue funding and five scientists under CSISA-BARC scholarship program
Four-months duration Foundation training to 160 scientists and 15-day long administrative and financial management training to 200 scientists have been provided
A total of 8140 scientists were trained in different important fields of agriculture through NATP & revenue funding
A total of 16744 farmers were trained and 11840 field days were organized by Krishi Gobeshona Foundation, under agricultural technology transfer activities with financial support of NATP
A total of 13,838 scientists/officers were participated in agricultural research and development related workshop at home and abroad
A book entitled “Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar” has been Published for reducing poverty & livelihood improvement of the farmers
To increase the cropping intensity and productivity in the southern region “Agricultural Technology Suitable for the Southern Region” has been Published
A publication entitled “Plant varieties developed by NARS institutes and Agricultural Universities” has been documented and Published
“Hand Book on Agricultural Technologies” has been documented and Published to extend agricultural technologies in farmer’s fields
A Book on “Utilization of fallow land of greater Barisal and Sylhet Districts” has been Published to prepare crop production plan for utilization of fallow land
A booklet titled “Use of chemicals in food products – How safe” has been Published which contains research findings and possible remedial measures
Data Centre has been established at BARC with a view to develop ICT infrastructure for strengthening information management of NARS organizations as part of constituting digital Bangladesh
Agricultural Research Management Information System (ARMIS) has been developed as a tool for informed decision making in agricultural R&D
An Electronic Compendium (documentary) has been prepared capturing the major research activities of the NARS institutes
A video documentary has been prepared for showcasing research activities and findings of NARS institutes
Web-based Archive has been developed to make important agricultural publications available to end user
Provided technical inputs for preparation of agricultural policy documents
Signed MoU with international research organizations and educational institutions for strengthening bilateral relation
