Boro has been affected by sowing in many places of Rangpur region and this season there is a problem of sowing seeds. Farmers say that due to winter with thick fog, many seedlings have already turned yellow and the saplings are dying. The Directorate of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has set targets for cultivating 23,201 hectares of land in Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Nilphamari districts during the current borough season. Kasem Mia, a farmer of Ramchandrapur in Konya upazila of Rangpur, said his seedling has become yellow due to the influence of winter weather. Asaduzzaman, another farmer of Kashbag in Rangpur city, said that the saplings were very bad in the age group of 20-25 days. According to the farmers, they did not get any positive results by spraying drugs on the damaged seedlings. They fear that if the intense winter continues for a few more days, the saplings will be severely damaged. In this situation, farmers fear that there may be a crisis of sowing during the current borough season. Because for many it will not be possible to plant new seeds. They said that they would be forced to buy saplings from the market at high prices. Which will increase their production costs. The farmers also said they could not get quality seedlings in the market. Which will greatly affect the production target. DAE officials, however, could not provide any information on the exact extent of damage to the seedling due to the winter. Rangpur DAE Additional Director Mohammad Ali said the damage assessment will be done once the weather is normal. He also said that they advised farmers to cover their seeds with polythene, spray sulfur-mixed drugs and get positive results on the use of urea and gypsum in the seedbed.
