Scientists at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute have developed BRRI Dhan105. The glycemic index (GI) value of this rice is 55. So a raisin with a low GI value is called a diabetic raisin.

Diabetic patients can eat this rice rice to their heart's content. Eating this low glycemic index (GI) rice will reduce the blood sugar of diabetic patients. The nutritional research department at the head office of BRRI has determined the nutritional value of BRRI rice-105 and reported this information. It is stated in the report that it is internationally recognized. Besides, agricultural scientists claim that this rice will play a positive role in the agricultural economy of the country in the future.

In the current Boro season, in Gopalganj, Bagerhat, and Narail districts, BRRI Dhan105 has been successfully planted on 8.7 hectares of land. Dr. Mohammad Zahidul Islam, Head and Senior Scientific Officer of Gopalganj Regional Office of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute said that the farmer got a yield of 6.5 to 7.5 tons per hectare.

The official said that the newly developed Bri rice 105 was approved for cultivation in March last year. Then the paddy is cultivated in the research field of Bri Gopalganj Regional Office. Although it is Boro season rice, it is cultivated as a seed in the Aman season. It gives the expected yield. We spread the cultivation of this rice among the farmers in the Gopalganj, Narail, and Bagerhat districts during the Boro season with the seeds of BRRI rice-105 produced in our research field. The agricultural scientist said that this rice will play a positive role in the agricultural economy of the country in the future.

BRRI Gopalganj Regional Office Scientific Officer Srijan Chandra Das said that among the newly developed varieties, BRRI-105 is a low GI diabetic rice of Boro season. Conventional rice has a GI value of 65 to 75. But the GI value of BRRI-105 rice is 55. Eating this rice will reduce blood sugar. The characteristics of this rice are medium-long and thin grains. Due to its low GI, it will gain wide acceptance as a diabetic rice. The trees remain green even after the paddy is ripe. The average height of a fully-grown tree of this variety is 101 cm. The average yield is 7.6 tonnes per hectare. However, if given proper care, it is capable of yielding up to 8.5 tons per hectare in a favorable environment.

He said that the size and shape of the grain of this variety is medium narrow and the color is golden. Its lifespan is 148 days. The weight of 1000 grains of this variety is 19.4 grams. It contains 27 percent amylose and 7.3 percent protein. Cooked rice is crisp and tasty. So the farmer is benefiting by cultivating this rice.

Gopalganj Khamarbari Deputy Director of Agricultural Extension Department. Quader Sardar said, that if enough seeds of Bri Dhan105 diabetes rice are found, the cultivation of this rice will be expanded in Gopalganj district. Diabetic patients will benefit from this. They can eat a little more rice. This type of rice plant is large in size. Hence it will be possible to store a sufficient amount of hay for cow feed.

Krishani Rikta Parveen of Jangal Mukundpur village of Kashiani Upazila said that we have cultivated Bri Dhan105 for the first time. This paddy yielded 7.5 tons per hectare. The paddy is long and thin. Diabetic patients eat boiled rice. So many are showing interest in irrigated farming. All the paddy produced in my land has been kept as seed. I can sell this paddy for at least 50 taka.

Swapan Biswas, a farmer of Devgram in Kotalipara upazila, said that the cultivation of this new variety of paddy required less irrigation and fertilizer. The production cost is economical and the yield of 105 varieties of BRRI rice is bumper. Because of this, the cultivation of this variety is profitable. There is a demand for this rice in the market. So we will expand diabetic rice cultivation in the future.
