China's Customs Office said Monday (February 24, 2020) that they lifted a ban on beef and beef products older than six months in the United States, following Beijing’s pledge to increase farm purchases from the United States under their Phase 1 trade deal. Inspection and quarantine requirements on these beef, and beef products in the United States will be set aside and released. A notification was posted on the Customs General Administration website dated February 19. China last week said it would waive the retaliatory tariff levied against 696 US products, including important agricultural products such as soybeans, beef and pork. China has been battling a deadly meat shortage after reducing the country's huge pigs by more than 40% in Africa's swine fever. Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus in the world's most populous country, measures have been taken to reduce livestock and poultry supply more severely. China for the first time lifted a 14-year ban on beef in the United States, allowing the importation of deboned and boned beef from American cows under the age of 30 months. Source: Online/SZK
